Orthoceras is a prehistoric crustacea, very much like our modern cuttle fish which lives today.
The bedrock in which usually surrounds the Orthoceras is Black in colour, very rarely is it found in Brown limestone but it has been known. The body/anatomy of the Orthoceras is white; where throughout the millions of years it has been fossilized, the internal chambers of this prehistoric animal, Calcite Quartz mineral has replaced the soft tissues, creating this beautiful and wondrous preview of the crustacea. It has helped influence such designs (below images) and has become increasingly popular for the home and interior décor designs.
